Perfect Companion: 1st Weekly Chest ‘Companion Contract’ pull is changed to suit you best
I meditated as I floated semi-formless in the void of the digital world while the game loaded in. It took longer than usual because I had several mods installed for my solo play world. My chosen mods were a Star Wars-themed pack, a Metroid-themed mod, a Pokemon-themed mod, and the very popular Perfect Companion mod, which altered your first Companion Contract from the Weekly Chest.
I was pulled from my thoughts as threads assembled my new body from all directions. The first sensations were that of gently swaying and the sound of water lapping against the side of a wooden vessel. It felt small. Opening my eyes, I saw that my assumption was correct; this was a skiff tied to the shore with a long rope. Thankfully, I had a lot of experience being out on the water, so I had my ‘sea legs’ and could roll up onto my feet. Scanning the area around myself, I could only see so much shore. This was either a coast or a gigantic lake.
Examining myself, I noted my dark gray skin and thick, black hair. The sides of my head were shaved, which was interesting. I moved toward the bow, grabbed the rope, and slowly pulled the boat into shore. I was pretty far out, so I focused on my Character Screen. It opened in front of me so I could read while working.
I was a Goblinoid whose family had lived around Blue Elf, Lapina(Harefolk), and Canian(Wolf-folk), which explained a few things. There was a link by this detail I’d check out later. My class, a Traveling Veiled Monk, was three classes combined: the primary was Monk, the secondary was Shadow Blade and the tertiary was Exorcist(Kabus). There was another link to Kabus, another thing to check out later.
Another interesting detail is my right arm, which was a magical prosthesis from the shoulder down. I had to look at it again because I could feel through it, so I hadn’t known until I’d read about it.
This world was so detailed it was almost too much to take in. I focused on getting to shore while I read more about this body and its features. I closed the window as I got closer to shore to keep an eye out for threats. Once I had the boat beached, I jumped out and untied the rope at both ends, as I figured it would come in handy at some point. It was a nice hempen rope.
I casually put it into my inventory, {500 ft, Hempen Rope} popped up in the bottom left-hand corner of my HUD to signal my success.
“I wonder,” I mumbled to myself as I turned toward the boat, grabbing it. I made the same motion as before. {Small Wooden Skiff} and {Oar x2} popped up underneath the first notification before it faded away. “That is awesome.”
I brought up my inventory; I didn’t have anything I hadn’t equipped already outside of the three things I had just picked up and my Kits (a Camp and an Enchanter’s Table). Weapon-wise, I had a Steel Bo Staff, a Dwarven Shortsword, and an Elven Dagger.
Staff in hand, I headed for the wood line to get away from the shore and get a little cover before I looked into my Menu further. I put my Camp down so I could relax in its Safe Zone. It was a basic tent and sleeping roll with a fire pit in the middle of the circle. I gathered some dry wood and got a fire for the aesthetic and a little warmth. I sat down on the bottom of the sleeping roll and opened my Map to find I was on the northeast shore of a sea-sized lake labeled Acetl’Ninf(The Grand Sea Lake).
Quest Points were already on my map from the mods I had chosen. The first one, SW Point 3, was almost directly north of my current location at the base of the mountains. So I figured I’d explore this area until it got dark and head that way in the morning.
I gathered herbs and berries, along with more firewood. The smell of the forest was dense and earthy, and I loved it while I explored. As night fell, I heard more movement in the surrounding area, so I headed back to my Camp to feed the fire. Turge, large, wolf-like creatures with scaly faces and horns, stepped into the light at the edge of my camp. I could see three immediately and was sure of a fourth lingering in the shadows behind them.
I drew my shortsword and considered how I wanted to approach this situation. I read about my abilities while watching them through the window. Thankfully, it was very translucent. I decided to try something out: Shadow Tether. I waited for one of the Turge to separate from the rest of the pack to make my move. I quickly thrust out my left hand and released the spell; a tendril of darkness shot out and grabbed the creature by the shoulder. The Turge was slammed into the bubble of the Safe Zone, and I let myself get pulled towards it at high speed. My shortsword was aimed between its neck and its shoulder as I hit it; my blade pierced it deep and killed it instantly. I pulled it free and put the Turge corpse in my inventory as I quickly backed up from the edge.
I shot another Tether at the left-most Turge and flew towards it, spinning at the last moment to slice its throat open in an upward motion, and then brought the blade back down onto the back of the other Turge’s neck. Both fell to the ground and were added to my inventory as I threw myself back to get distance.
{Level Up- 1 Shadow Blade Skill, 1 Monk Skill} popped up in the corner of the HUD. I used my Cleansing Seal to clean the blood off of myself and my Camp, the latter being a very nice feature.
A much larger Turge stepped up. It was easily twice as big as the others. I felt a little bad, but they came at me. I looked at my new abilities, Shadow Kunai specifically. I could throw three before I need to rest and regain my stamina. I was hoping I only needed two.
Using both hands, I shot at both shoulders of the Alpha Turge before Tetherin its muzzle to launch myself at it. The Kunais hit their marks, its mouth opened, and I thrust my shortsword up through its palate into its brain.
This fell the beast instantly; this took me with it, dragging its teeth against my prosthetic arm. It hurt way more than I had anticipated. I managed to pull my arm free and used a Healing Seal twice in panic. Luckily, I had recovered some stamina, so I wasn’t completely exhausted. I cut the Alpha’s head off to put it into my inventory. I could harvest from the head or turn it into a trophy; both were interesting options.
Once again, I cleaned myself off with Cleansing Seals; the game informed me that this was smart- {Cleansing is a valid part of combat. Blood makes weapons handles slippery, and the same goes for the bottom of your boots. Many other reasons exist for using this type of spell actively in combat.}
“That is validating.” I opened my Notes and added ‘Buy Butcher’s Table’ to my shopping list so I could harvest from beasts more efficiently. The adrenaline pulsed through my system, so I walked in round laps inside my Camp, stopping to stoke the fire occasionally. It took longer than expected to wear off, but I crawled onto my bedroll and passed out once it had. I woke up sore but rested in the morning. Each night of play in the real world was three days and two nights in-game, so I had more time to play.
I looked at the character customization while I ate some rations, which were like great power bars. I could change my hairdo, but it seemed like it didn’t impact the length: my eyes, claws, and one of two different types of tail. There were also intimate details, with far more details than I expected. I selected what I wanted and let my nearly instant body reset.
“Off into the wild blue yonder.” I picked up my Camp and headed northeast, sticking to the forest's edge as I looked for a way into the mountains. The Star Wars Mod Point 3 wasn’t that far away. I knew I wouldn’t get to it before the next irl night’s play, though. I went into my Quest menu and tracked Point 3, so I had a marker to focus on. I created several Notes on varying subjects so I could add to them as I played.
Until I found a path into the mountain, I continued to collect herbs and berries as I made my way through the forest. I tested out a theory when I saw some fish in the stream coming off the mountains. I was surprised that I could actually catch them with my Shadow Tether. They made for a good lunch and later a dinner. As I explored, I played with the Tether, getting used to pulling myself around in different directions.
Eventually, I set up Camp for the night again, in a different location this time. Nothing came near my Camp this time, so I got plenty of rest, which was nice considering how active I was that day.
******
I followed a stream that flowed down from the mountains in the morning. Not long after this, I saw someone camping beside the stream.
“Hail,” I called from a distance to avoid spooking them as I kept walking.
“Hail. You're far out in the trees.” the other person looked up, and upon coming closer, I saw that they were Ottican, and judging from their voice, they were female. They were wearing lavender-colored robes with their hood up. The blue of another garment could be seen beneath it.
“As are you. It’s lovely and quiet out here. I'm headed for an area up in the mountains. Do you live out here?” I was curious.
“I guess I sort of do,” she chuckled, “I like wandering and collecting experiences.”
“Admirable. Are you heading in any particular direction?” I inquired.
“I was thinking about heading for the Northern Monastery to see if they let me study their library and artifacts.” She happily replied.
“A scholar then?” I kept my distance but got close enough that we no longer needed to shout.
“I am magically inclined, so I figured learning about artifacts and history was a good way to start on that path,” she explained.
“Quite intelligent. If you'd like to use my Camp on your journey there, I am headed that way with a minor detour. It's warmth and safety guaranteed.” I offered, but I couldn't think of a reason not to.
“Actually, that would be great unless that detour is violence-centric.” She accepted the offer tentatively.
“I do not believe it will be; I have the location of some artifacts I wish to claim. For study and possibly use depending.” I didn't want to lie to her. “Let's enter into a handshake contract- I allow you to use my Camp for safe travel and rest, and you lend me your expertise with any artifacts I recover.” I offered out my hand.
“I’m in. This should be interesting. Willowtree. For the record, I am not a fighter.” She said, shaking my hand with a firm grip.
“That’s totally fine. I’m hoping for minimal combat in our travels. If something happens, I’ll throw my Camp down. Jasper.” I pointed out.
“So, you’re talking about magical camp and not just safety in numbers, right?” She looked very excited.
“I am indeed,” I confirmed.
“Oh, I can’t wait to see it. I’ve heard of them but never seen one in person.” Her legs were bouncing in anticipation.
“You’ll have more than enough time to study it on our way to the monastery,” I assured her; I had nothing against curiosity. I encouraged it, actually.
“Thank you.” She said.
“You’re more than welcome.” I gave her a nod of my head, “We should get moving soon if we’re going to make it a decent distance by nightfall.” I pointed out.
“I just need to pack a few things up, and I’m good to get moving.” Willow started getting her things together; she’d had a pan out for cooking, a long-gone fish breakfast, and that was about it.
